Description

In order to monitor the salinity during the salt-stress field trials, a salinity remote detection system will be developed and implemented in selected pilot areas. The development of this sensor will be done in conjunction with the project end-users and rice farmers of the different rice producing European regions involved in this project. The development of this novel Wireless Sensor Network based on low cost electrical conductivity sensors and an autonomous power supply based on energy harvesting will provide real time data of the salinity conditions of the rice paddies. This system will include a software package including a data-mining layer in which all the data collected in the fields will be used for improving the management of irrigation through a decision support system. It will serve to evaluate in real time the impact of the proposed adaptability interventions in response to salinity levels while ensuring the productivity and stability of the agricultural sector. This system will comprise a mesh of interconnected nodes acquiring salinity data, which will be remotely sent to a central server for data mining and the final output will be displayed through a user-friendly interface for supporting irrigation decision making. The system will comprise energy harvesting technologies for being completely autonomous during the rice growing season and will allow the correct management and evaluation of the impacts on the proposed genetic and environmental interventions.
